If you are one of those people, if you are in intense or chronic pain then a treatment known as MUA could be the answer for you.

What is Manipulation Under Anesthetic?

Chronic Pain Syndrome often starts with an old auto, sports or work injury that was unresponsive to therapy and or medication. The pain of the injury usually last longer then six months, many times leading to secondary complications that make the original pain worse. Chronic Pain Syndrome often leads to secondary problems such as loss of sleep, inability to work and missing out on family functions. There is hope. A procedure that has been around for years and is getting a lot of recognition lately. It’s called Manipulation Under Anesthesia. Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) is a practice of nonoperative restoration of the function of muscles and joints. This may be the key to help you function and feel better.

How Does the Procedure Work?

It is performed using conscious sedation in a surgical setting. The patient is taken through passive ranges of motion. Specific joint and muscle manipulations are then performed. Stretching of the surrounding supportive musculature is performed to promote greater flexibility in conjunction with attempting to restore proper motions. The procedure normally takes around 15 to 20 minutes to complete, and is performed by specifically trained chiropractors.

Who Is it For?

It is for anyone who falls into that category of chronic pain which cannot be treated by normal chiropractic manipulation. There are many cases where people are not receptive to regular chiro care due to excessive scar tissue build up or adhesions. Their pain is so unbearable, it is hard for them to be touched, let alone receive professional care from a chiropractor, that it becomes necessary to sedate them.

Where Can I Get Treated?

Manipulation Under Anesthesia is performed by Board Certified Anesthesiologist, an MUA certified M.D./D.O. and or D.C. who performs the manipulation and the skilled nursing staff of the Surgical Center. Only a physician that has been certified in MUA can perform the MUA procedure. Right now, there are only two chiropractors within New Jersey certified to carry out the procedure.
